Why This Recipe is so good
- Butterfly pea flower has a strong earthy and woody flavor, similar to green tea matcha powder, which is why it is sometimes described as blue matcha, but it doesn’t contain any caffeine. Butterfly pea flower petals are naturally a vibrant blue color – no artificial dyes or colorings. It makes the prettiest lattes and when used to make Butterfly Pea Flower Lemonade it turns from dark blue to a lovely purple color.
- This herbal tea latte is dairy free, vegan and made in under 10 minutes with 4 ingredients. It is delicious with a unique floral and earthy taste. Butterfly pea flower lattes are an excellent caffeine free latte alternative to traditional lattes and matcha lattes. Enjoy it iced or hot!
Recipe Ingredients

Butterfly pea flower powder. The powdered tea will give a very dark blue color and an intense flavor to your latte. Steeping dried tea petals and using them as tea will yield a lighter tea flavor and a less intense blue color, if any.
Sweetener. Cane sugar is used to lightly sweeten this blue matcha latte. Feel free to swap for an all natural sweeter like honey or maple syrup.
Milk. I used a creamy barista-blend oat milk. Dairy milk, soy, almond or coconut milk can be used as desired.

Frequently asked questions
Butterfly pea flower is a plant native to Southeast Asia. The dark blue flower petals can be steeped into a tea or finely ground into a powder to add to drinks or used as a natural food coloring. It has a woodsy and earthy flavor with a hint of floral. I find the taste pretty strong, and it comes through nicely in this tea latte.
Butterfly pea flower is sometimes described as “blue matcha” because it has a similar earthy flavor as green tea matcha powder. These are two different plants, one contains caffeine – the green tea powder, and the butterfly pea flower is a dried flower petal, and it is caffeine-free. You can find it online or in health food stores as either “butterfly pea flower powder” or “blue matcha”, it’s the same thing.

Tips and Tricks
- If you have butterfly pea flower syrup on hand use 2 tablespoons of butterfly pea flower syrup instead of the butterfly pea flower powder. Your latte won’t have a vibrant dark blue color but it will have a hint of butterfly pea flower flavor.
- Want a warm latte? Add all the ingredients to a small saucepot, whisk until combined and there aren’t any chunks of powder then heat until hot and steamy, but not boiling.
- Add green tea matcha powder if you are wanting a caffeine boost.
- Add 1 serving of your favorite protein powder to make a high-protein tea latte.
- Sweeten with an all-natural sweetener like maple syrup, honey or stevia instead of cane sugar.
