Why This Recipe is so good

If you love matcha lattes and hot chocolate this recipe is a dream. This oat milk hot chocolate has a hint of earthy matcha and rich cacao chocolate powder. It’s creamy and perfectly sweet.

Warm cozy drinks aren’t only for the cold winter months. This matcha hot chocolate with cacao is a delicious drink no matter the season.

Because this hot chocolate is made with matcha green tea powder, it does contain a kick of caffeine, so it’s a great drink to enjoy in the afternoon if you are in need of a caffeine boost. Even with the caffeine, the cacao makes this drink really comforting and relaxing.

  • Matcha powder. This earthy green tea powder mixes so well with the intense chocolate-y flavor of cacao powder. It’s so good. Use a good quality ceremonial grade matcha powder because it will give your hot chocolate a nice earthy flavor but not a bitter grassy taste.
  • Cacao powder. Cacao powder has been minimally processed, so it has an intense, rich chocolate flavor, compared to Dutch-processed cocoa powder, which has a smoother, less intense chocolate flavor. Either one works here.
  • Oat milk. Oat milk makes the best dairy free matcha hot chocolate. It’s thick and creamy and just so good. Almond milk or coconut milk can also be delicious choices or simply use dairy cows milk if you aren’t dairy free.
  • Vanilla extract and sugar. Vanilla takes this matcha hot cocoa to the next level. Just a hint of vanilla and cane sugar for sweetness and additional flavor.

How to Make Cacao Matcha Hot Chocolate

All ingredients, measurements, and instructions are in the recipe card at the bottom of this post.

In a small sauce pot heat oat milk or your milk of choice until steamy. Don’t boil.

In a serving mug, add matcha powder, cacao or cocoa powder, cane sugar, vanilla extract, and warm water. Use a milk frother to whisk until combined. Pour in hot oat milk, stir, and enjoy. You can top it with marshmallows or a dollop of homemade whipped cream made from scratch.

Tips and Tricks

Matcha powder. When choosing the perfect matcha powder to use, look for ceremonial grade. It is more expensive than culinary grade but if you are using matcha for drinks it will taste so much better. This grade has a bright green color with a lighter earthy and grassy taste. My favorite brands for ceremonial-grade matcha are Matcha Love and Naoki.

Cacao powder. I love the intense flavor of cacao powder in hot chocolate. It has a deeper flavor than Dutch-processed cocoa powder, but both are perfectly fine to use. Just use unsweetened since were are adding sugar to this recipe.

Milk. I used oat milk to keep this recipe dairy free while still giving a dairy milk type of creaminess. Almond milk or coconut milk can be used as well, or even dairy milk if you aren’t dairy free.
