Why This Recipe is so good

Mushroom hot chocolate is my favorite sleepy-time drink. The warm chocolate and herbal mushrooms are very relaxing and have a lot of supportive properties. I used a 5 mushroom blend that doesn’t have an intense mushroom flavor, so it’s perfectly delicious in this protein hot chocolate without being overwhelmingly mushroomy.

It’s a trend to make everything high protein these days, but I love finding ways to add more protein into my favorite foods without having to do too much, so that’s why I love this whey protein hot chocolate. I used ½ serving of this protein powder but a full serving will give you 22 grams of protein. It makes this mushroom hot chocolate rich and creamy and so delicious.

Recipe Ingredients

  • Water or milk. I used hot water but of course dairy or non-dairy milk like oat milk or almond milk will make this hot chocolate even more luxurious.
  • Protein powder. Unsweetened, unflavored whey protein powder. I used half a serving, which was about 2 ½ tablespoons, with 11 grams of protein. Vanilla or chocolate protein powder will be delicious as well.
  • Cacao powder. Cacao powder is made by minimally processing cacao beans. It has a strong and intense chocolate flavor. Dutch processed cocoa powder can be used as well, has been more processed with has a smoother less bitter chocolate taste.
  • Mushroom powder. There are many different mushroom powders on the market to choose from. The one I used was a 5 mushroom blend and it doesn’t have much of a flavor at all. There are also 7 and 10 mushroom blends, which have a more intense, earthy mushroom flavor. Start with a little bit, then add more according to your taste.
  • Cane sugar. To sweeten this protein mushroom hot chocolate. Can use honey or maple syrup instead.

How to Make High Protein Hot Chocolate with Mushrooms

All ingredients, measurements, and instructions are in the recipe card at the bottom of this post.

In a mug combine whey protein powder, mushroom powder, cacao powder, cane sugar with  2 – 3 tablespoons of cold water. Use a milk frother to whisk until smooth without any clumps. Add a bit more water if needed.

Next, pour in hot water or milk. Stir to combine. Every protein powder is different. For one brand, 1 serving was 2 ½ tablespoons of powder, and for another brand, 1 serving was 5 tablespoons. Add more water or milk as needed if it’s too thick for your liking.

Enjoy your protein hot chocolate as is or topped with marshmallows or whipped cream.

Tips and Tricks

Whisk protein powder with cold water to reduce clumps. Use just enough so you can whisk it until combined and frothy, about 2 – 3 tablespoons.

Cacao or cocoa powder will work here, it’s just up to personal preference.

Sugar. I would avoid using powdered sugar because it often contains anti-caking agents that can give your hot chocolate an “off” taste. Regular sugar or honey will dissolve just fine when combined with hot water or milk.

Add chocolate chips to your hot chocolate only if you are using dairy or non-dairy milk, otherwise the chocolate will seize and clump in the hot water. Add milk and the rest of the hot chocolate ingredients into a sauce pot. Whisk using a milk frother or whisk until there aren’t any clumps of protein powder, then add 2 tablespoons of semi-sweet or milk chocolate chips. Heat the hot chocolate over medium heat until hot and steamy, and the chocolate has melted.
