Why This Recipe is So Good
- Adding a scoop or two of protein powder to your favorite matcha latte is an easy way to hit your protein goals. It makes your morning matcha extra creamy and the added protein keeps you fuller for longer – perfect for busy days!
- It takes 5 minutes to make. Add everything to a serving glass or travel mug then add ice.
- Making matcha lattes in addition to this protein iced matcha latte at home is so much more affordable than going to coffee shops. A bag of culinary grade or ceremonial grade matcha powder can last me a month, and it makes dozens of matcha drinks. This recipe is made with 4 ingredients without added sugar, natural flavors, or additives. It’s gluten free and can be made dairy free as well.
Recipe Ingredients

All ingredients, measurements, and instructions are in the recipe card at the bottom of this post.
Protein powder – Use a protein powder that you enjoy the flavor of. I used vanilla whey protein, it’s not chalky, and it doesn’t contain any added sugar (it’s sweetened with stevia extract). If you are dairy-free, swap it out for a vegan protein powder.
Matcha powder – Ceremonial green tea matcha powder has a bright green color and smooth grassy flavor. Culinary grade matcha is best used for baking or cooking since it tends to have a bitter flavor and darker, almost brownish green color. For this matcha latte recipe, the protein powder flavor is pretty strong so it doesn’t matter too much whether you are using ceremonial grade or culinary grade matcha powder.
Milk – Your favorite dairy or dairy free milk will work here. My personal favorite is oat milk from Califa- their barista blend. Coconut milk or almond milk will make a delicious green tea protein shake as well.
How to Make Protein Matcha Latte

- Whisk matcha: In a small cup or matcha bowl, add warm water and matcha powder. Use a milk frother or bamboo whisk to whisk the matcha until it’s nice and frothy.
- Add protein powder: Add milk and your protein powder of choice to mason jar. Top with a lid then shake to combine. Alternatively, you can use a milk frother to whisk it really well so there aren’t any chunks of protein powder. Then add ice.
- Pour your prepared matcha mixture into the glass with the milk then stir to combine and enjoy.
Tips and Tricks
Whisking protein powder to avoid chunks: I found it easier to whisk the protein powder in half of the milk with an electric milk frother otherwise, it was a little chunky. Continue whisking until smooth and frothy without chunks. You could also add the milk and protein powder to a shaker bottle or mason jar with a lid, shaking until combined, then pour into a glass with ice.
Sweetness: The protein powder I used is naturally sweetened with stevia powder, so this protein matcha is lightly sweetened. If you want to make a sweeter drink, add additional stevia, sugar/sugar syrup, or honey. Or try switching up the flavor of this latte by adding this Vanilla Brown Sugar Syrup, Blueberry Simple Syrup or Honey Lavender Simple Syrup.
