Why This Recipe is so good
Iced matcha lattes are the drink of the summer and the addition of blue matcha makes it even more special and beautiful. Butterfly pea flower is native to tropical Asia and it’s known for its relaxing and antioxidant properties. The flower petals are dried and can be steeped into a tea or ground into a fine powder.
While butterfly pea flower is naturally caffeine free, because this latte contains matcha powder it can be very energizing. Perfect for a mid-afternoon slump this simple tea latte is delicious and quick to make in 10 minutes. It’s also vegan, dairy free, and lightly sweetened.
Recipe Ingredients

- Butterfly pea flower powder. Also called blue matcha, this is powdered butterfly pea flower petals. This powdered tea will give a very dark blue color and intense flavor to your latte. Steeping dried tea leaves then using it as a tea will yield a lighter tea flavor and less intense blue color.
- Matcha. This blue matcha latte does actually contain green tea matcha powder, to give this latte a boost of caffeine. Use a good quality ceremonial grade matcha powder, it has a bright green color and smooth grassy flavor. Try to avoid using culinary grade matcha for this recipe because it tends to have a bitter flavor and a more dull brownish green color.
- Sweetener. Cane sugar is used to lightly sweeten this blue matcha latte. Feel free to swap for an all natural sweeter like honey or maple syrup.
- Milk. I used a creamy barista-blend oat milk. Dairy milk, soy, almond or coconut milk can be used as desired.

Notes
Tips and Tricks
- If you have butterfly pea flower syrup on hand use 2 tablespoons of butterfly pea flower syrup instead of the butterfly pea flower powder. Your latte won’t have a vibrant dark blue color but it will have a hint of butterfly pea flower flavor.
- Want a warm latte? Add all the ingredients to a small saucepot, whisk until combined and there aren’t any chunks of powder then heat until hot and steamy, but not boiling.
- Add 1 serving of your favorite protein powder to make a high-protein tea latte.
- Sweeten with an all-natural sweetener like maple syrup, honey or stevia instead of cane sugar.
